Burnt Wood, Climbing Hydrangea Clipping, Spray Paint, Spray Foam
2024
Vulnerability is a necessary predecessor for growth. It is only through hardship and suffering that we emerge stronger and anew. Each work is created mainly from found or recycled materials; materials that have already lived a life and would often be considered garbage. Through foraging and scavenging I collect objects that speak to me, often discarded and burnt wood, dead flowers, and fallen tree bark. I sometimes alter these materials and then arrange them in a new way, giving them new life.
These pieces represent transformation and resilience offering that one can always start anew by exploring the organic cycles of nature. Viewers are invited to rethink society’s opinions on what is often seen as the “end” of a cycle; and to consider that what may feel like the end can also be seen as a beginning, the beginning of a rebirth. A reminder that the journey doesn’t end here.
In a society that often frowns on showing vulnerability and suffering, “From The Ashes” celebrates it along with the inner transformation that occurs as a result. Their scars are proudly and fully on display, radiating proof of trauma and the beauty of fortitude discovered in the survival of that trauma.
